Watch This Space!

Delivered by BID Leamington

Watch this space is an ambitious, vibrant campaign to bring unused high street windows to life in Royal Leamington Spa.

The initiative spearheaded by BID Leamington aims to temporarily transform the windows of empty stores and bring a touch of style to exteriors while properties find new purpose and tenants.

The ‘Watch this Space’ campaign is a collaborative effort between BID Leamington, local agents, property owners and local businesses Craig Spivey Creative, TonyG and Gallery Photiq. Together they have a wealth of global retail and design experience to draw on and wish to inspire anticipation as the town is poised for a range of exciting developments in the town centre.

The eye-catching images have been developed by taking photographs of cut-glass vessels in the Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum to capture the town’s sparkle.

First on the list for the smartening-up treatment are the ground floor windows of the former House of Fraser store on the Parade. The property is being refurbished into a high-quality office and design space called Bedford Street Studios with video gaming company Sumo Digital set to occupy the first and second floors over the next few months.

Stephanie Kerr, Executive Director at BID Leamington, said: “We were increasingly concerned about key sites looking unloved and when we contacted local agents and property owners, we received a positive response to our ideas to help support their transformation.

“We want to surprise and delight residents and visitors with these colourful and intriguing images and maintain the celebration of our beautiful town centre whilst businesses are developed for new uses.

“It’s the first stage in a new approach which we hope in future may lead to including Augmented Reality activity, pop-up art and working with new tenants to explain their plans for each site.

“Similar windows campaigns have been run in towns and cities throughout the UK with vinyl graphics being used to brighten up stores that have closed down, so here in Leamington we want to build on this and take it a step further.”

Nat Coalson of Gallery Photiq photographed the beautiful historic assets, and working with Craig Spivey Creative and TonyG, the images have been transformed into high-quality vinyl graphics to adorn the windows.

Coalson said: “I’m grateful to be involved with this project, which has been an exciting opportunity for me to create abstract photography that conveys the beautiful essence of our special town.”

Heather Golding from TonyG added: “As a Leamingtonian, it’s been really rewarding to add something of value to this project. Our work takes us across the UK from Edinburgh to Bicester Village to Bond Street, so being able to apply some premium retail experience to our hometown is very fitting.

“Working with the glass photography was great fun, creating illustrative treatments for an abstract and painterly effect. Taking historic patterns from glassware and putting them back on glass in a different form over 100 years later, was also a nice circle!”

Craig Spivey, Independent Creative Director, said: “One of the new ways we have developed to express Leamington’s sparkle is through the photography of the glass collection in our local museum. Leamington Spa’s fortunes were built on water and these beautiful images of vessels from its heyday as a resort capture the many colourful facets of the town.

“It’s a dynamic way of presenting Victorian decorative arts with a fresh, contemporary edge that’s very unique to Leamington and adds a little extra layer of meaning to the designs we produce.”

Santa’s Postbox

Santa’s Postbox

Santa’s postbox

Delivered by BID Leamington

Seeing the magic of Christmas through children’s eyes, when they post their letters to Santa is priceless, so each year we install this special postbox in a new location.

First launched during Covid, with careful promotion this allowed engagement with Leamington town when other festive activities were not available.

In 2020, over 2,700 beautiful letters were posted from adults and children, some of which have been archived in the Royal Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum as they reflect an unforgettable point in history.

Santa’s postbox returned in 2021 and this time was placed in Regent Court Shopping Centre with around 900 letters posted over the four weeks it was in place.

In 2022, the postbox will once again return in a new location with new surprises to delight town centre families.

Meaningful Change

Delivered by BID Leamington

Meaningful Change is a multi-agency campaign aimed at helping to positively change the lives of those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in Royal Leamington Spa.

BID Leamington developed Meaningful Change with funding from the Warwickshire Police and Crime Commissioner and with input from Warwick and Stratford District Councils, Warwickshire Police and numerous local Leamington charities that support vulnerable people (i.e. Helping Hands, Salvation Army, P3).

In Leamington there are a range of charities working to support vulnerable people in our community in different ways. This ranges from supporting people with day-to-day needs, to providing long term support enabling them to make a lasting and meaningful change.

Meaningful Change comprises of a website and a number of contactless donation points around the town centre, enabling a trusted source of information and giving. Funds are distributed back to our local charities via grants to support gaps in services. You can read more about this by clicking here.

Day-to-day administration of Meaningful Change is managed by BID Leamington and Warwick District Council. Meaningful Change is also supported by the Heart of England Community Foundation (Charity No 1117345).

The feedback has been overwhelmingly good – both locally and further afield.

“I have been meaning to say for a long time a big “Thank You” for organising Meaningful Change and implementing it.  I am lost in admiration.  Making card donations so easy is great”

Highlights of this project include:

  • Over £10,000 has been collected since we launched – and many grants has been made.
  • A Warwick District Council officer (Jon Barnett) has been assigned to help manage this project. He also helps to administer the Warwick Retail Crime Initiative (WRCI) here in Leamington. This is a much needed and very welcome new resource.
  • Further financial resources have been provided by WDC and the Town Council (£2000) to create more contactless giving points. Using this funding we now have 4 x window devices and 2 x podiums, so we are working on securing locations.
  • A7 information cards which have been distributed locally and A0 and A1 posters are in the car parks.
  • There has been strong media support – including numerous interviews on BBC Radio Coventry and Warwickshire as part of a national homelessness focus.
  • The project has been replicated in Stratford Upon Avon, with local distinctions and some shared resources.

Parking Angels

Leamington Parking Angels

Delivered by BID Leamington

Christmas Parking Angels land in Royal Leamington Spa over the festive season every year to help shoppers fnd car parking spaces, offer maps and advice and generally add a little bit of cheer into the day of shoppers.

BID Leamington aims to enhance the shopping experience and add some magic in the town centre from the moment visitors arrive.

The Angels watch over the town centre ensuring that parking services are easy for customers to use and helping with change. The Parking Angels are easily spotted by their white puffer jackets, sparkly white wings, brass trumpets and bells, which may sound when they do good deeds.

To add a little extra festive fun, they also carry offers from local businesses, so visitors are encouraged to stop and say hello.

Stephanie Kerr, Executive Director of BID Leamington, said: “Working so closely with those who shop, dine or trade in Leamington, we are very aware of the importance of having customer friendly parking services.

“Offering a magical shopping experience is very important and it is very easy to undermine the amazing service our businesses offer if customers have to struggle with finding a space or ticket when they arrive.  Royal Leamington Spa is a fantastic place to visit at Christmas time with a wide variety of shops, wonderful lights and great service, so this was something that could help at this busy time of year.”

“We also hope it helps people smile, add to the festive cheer and goodwill and help enhance the existing positive rapport between traders and their customers. BID Leamington is always trying out new ideas to drive custom into the town centre and ensure it offers an unrivalled retail and dining experience.”

Lights of Leamington Study

Delivered by BID Leamington in partnership with the Lights of Leamington Steering Group including David Clargo, Carole Sleight, and Sidney Syson.

BID Leamington secured some grant funding from Arts Council England to research the return of this amazing historical event. The feasibility study has now launched and is underway. The consultants will be visiting soon to assess the site and run some workshops, including an online workshop open to businesses too.

From 1951- 1961 the lights attracted thousands of visitors to Leamington Spa and many people have fond memories of this spectacular event. It was this event that inspired the Leamington Lantern Parade, an event we have been running since 2012.

During this time many people have discussed the idea of ‘reigniting’ the Lights of Leamington, however it would be a significant task and support from all stakeholders, business, residents, local organisations and the wider community will be essential. This is why the Arts Council of England has supported us to carry out a feasibility study to understand all aspects of the idea.

We have created a dedicated website and social media pages to provide background information and keep communicating updates to the project. A survey has just been completed by 237 people, the results will be announced soon.

Leamington Christmas Lights

Delivered by BID Leamington in partnership with Leamington Spa Town Council and Warwick District Council (WDC).

With the increase in online sales, towns face major competition to maintain Christmas trade in their centres.

Making Royal Leamington Spa an attractive place to shop during Christmas, and creating a positive and interesting shopping experience is key to improving the town’s footfall.

In a good example of local agencies working together for the benefit of Royal Leamington Spa, the Christmas lights are sourced and organised jointly between the BID Leamington and Warwick District Council (WDC).

The lights are funded by BID Leamington whilst the Christmas Lights Switch-On is organised by WDC. The installation, removal and storage of all the lights, together with the scheme outside the BID area, are funded by Warwick District Council and Royal Leamington Spa Town Council.

The Garden Town of Shakespeareland

The Garden Town of Shakespeareland

Delivered by BID Leamington, Sarah Horne Flowers, Creative Garden Design and Charles Branson Design

This was an ambitious project to showcase Royal Leamington Spa at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2014 and the garden won a coveted Chelsea Silver Medal.

This enchanting exhibit was the result of the enthusiasm and involvement of local businesses, organisations, schools and individuals who brought together their skills, their resources and their energy.  The team were overwhelmed by the response from the local community in supporting this project.

The design captured the essence of the town with its sophisticated Regency exterior, its unique individual character and its artistic, cultural and theatrical interior.

The collaboration contains planting to reflect the different areas of Leamington with floral pods each encapsulating a different style.  It also incorporates a large water inspired element to reflect the River Leam, lakes and fountains associated with this beautiful town.

This ambitious project was completely community funded – drawing together over 70 businesses and many residents from across the region who wanted to make a positive contribution to the town.
You can view the arbour in Jephson Gardens.
