Help Points in Leamington Spa Town Centre

Delivered and supported by a partnership including Warwick District Council Safer Streets Team, Royal Leamington Spa Town Council, Warwickshire County Council, the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, BID Leamington and the Warwickshire Retail Crime Initiative (WRCI).

We are very pleased to have 10 ‘Help Points’ in various town centre locations to support community safety.

These allow members of the public or staff in nearby businesses to have direct voice contact with a trained CCTV room operator. They can be used in emergencies or to get support or advice if someone is feeling vulnerable.

These call points, dotted around the town centre, are located on posts in carefully selected locations that are visible via CCTV, and can be identified by a bright ‘yellow box’ and an information sign.

When you press the call button, a member of staff from Warwick District Council’s CCTV operation room will respond. This is manned 24 hours are day, 7 days a week.

The CCTV team will reassure you that you are visible on camera and can make contact with local Police.

  4. Warwick Street – Oxford Street (opposite Leif)
  5. Parade – Pump Room Gardens (on the Dormer Place junction)
  6. Bedford Street Car Park
  7. Bath Street – High Street Junction
  8. Court Street Car Park
  9. Clemens Street (outside No 30)
  10. Brunswick Street (outside the Public Toilets)

Other Policing & Public Safety Initiatives

Alongside the help points, a manned ‘Safe Space’ operates on Friday and Saturday nights from 10pm – 4am, in ‘South Lodge’ at the entrance to Jephson Gardens. A team of Community Wardens work alongside the Police to keep our community safe, and we also value the presence and help of Street Pastors on selected evenings. Finally, the Warwickshire Retail Crime Initiative (WRCI) partners with businesses and agencies to help identify and address retail crime.

Ambitions to meet important sustainable development, health and well-being, environment, mobility, climate change and air quality goals are being actively discussed by the BID Leamington team, alongside practical, technical, financial and social considerations.

We want to #PowerPositiveChange and see opportunity to improve research, dialogue and for greater business leadership as part of our emerging future agenda in this space. We also welcome the opportunity to collaborate with local partners and to experiment with ideas to gauge feedback – a tactical urbanism approach.

One such collaborative trail called ‘#LiftLeam’ that we were very proud to support was with University of Warwick’s free Creative Futures Incubator, which is based in Leamington Spa’s co-working space 1 Mill Street. Two e-trikes, from Hail Services arrived in town to promote the programme and power customers up and down the Parade whilst it was closed (during Covid).

Building on this success BID Leamington once again worked with Hail Services and arranged for two Royal Leamington Spa branded e-trikes to transport visitors around our town centre during the Commonwealth Games. These were loaded with maps and guides promoting local businesses and provided over 700 lifts! They were also featured on ITV News (below).

This is just the beginning of our thinking, so please let us know if you have ideas or would like to play a role in future.

Delivered by BID Leamington in partnership with the Lights of Leamington Steering Group including David Clargo, Carole Sleight, and Sidney Syson.

 

BID Leamington secured some grant funding from Arts Council England to research the return of this amazing historical event. The feasibility study has now launched and is underway. The consultants will be visiting soon to assess the site and run some workshops, including an online workshop open to businesses too.

From 1951- 1961 the lights attracted thousands of visitors to Leamington Spa and many people have fond memories of this spectacular event. It was this event that inspired the Leamington Lantern Parade, an event we have been running since 2012.

During this time many people have discussed the idea of ‘reigniting’ the Lights of Leamington, however it would be a significant task and support from all stakeholders, business, residents, local organisations and the wider community will be essential. This is why the Arts Council of England has supported us to carry out a feasibility study to understand all aspects of the idea.

We have created a dedicated website and social media pages to provide background information and keep communicating updates to the project. A survey has just been completed by 237 people, the results will be announced soon.
